River’s Edge has a problem. A severe outbreak of rabies has been declared and people are dying by the truckload. Sort of. A survivor by the name of Gavin who is trying to find his family has a feeling there is something more to this rabies outbreak and as the story progresses, and he encounters other survivors he discovers just what.

River’s Edge is full of zombies and they’re hungry. Before long Gavin and his rag tag group have dubbed the zombies ‘bees’ in ‘honor’ of the way they swarm when attacking – and not only do the survivors have to watch out for the bees, they are also in danger of being killed by the exterminators. Exterminators are soldiers who have been sent to well…exterminate the zombies. Or anything they might come across.

Ok  I have to be honest up front. I’m not a zombie fan. The idea makes me feel a little ill – not in an ‘oh please, get real’ kind of way. It’s more of an ‘oh please excuse me, I think I’m going to be sick’ kind of way. I think it has something to do with the way zombies are portrayed as being so relentless and hungry…but I digress.

Chris Williams

Originally an online, serialised novel Dead Meat was no different, it made me feel ill. But that is not a criticism – it’s a compliment. Well written with strong narrative, excellent characters and yes nausea inducing descriptions, Dead Meat is a good addition to any horror library and a must read for any zombiephile. Yes, such things exist. My sister is one….

It’s impossible to not be drawn into the horror and desperation Gavin experiences as the story advances and this is testimony to the talent of the authors. A little online research suggests there are more instalments to come and I certainly hope so as the brothers’ style and talent has certainly hooked me. Even if I am double checking all the locks tonight.

Gosh, thanks so much to the lovely Candi, over on Just Can’t Beat Books. I was honored to be in such great company – there are some Very Cool young bloggers out there folks, including Candi, reviewing all kinds of books, so be nice and visit them.
But first there are a few questions I have to answer:
1. Favourite Color?
Red and electric pink. Generally not at the same time…
2. Favourite animal?
Bears and a certain pair of twin black Mandalay cats that sometimes let me cuddle them.
3.Favourite number?
19
4. Favourite (non-alcoholic) drink?
Coffee or peach iced tea
5. Facebook or Twitter?
Both. I admit it, I’m a social media junky.
6.My passions?
In no particular order: My family, Bruce Springsteen, Buddhism, writing, reading, editing, reviewing, blogging, movies, chocolate, champagne.
7. Getting or giving presents?
Giving because it always more fun. Not that I’m against getting you understand….but I do love watching my kids’ faces when they get presents.
8.Favourite pattern?
Not if I see it coming first – classic and plain, that’s me.
9. Favourite day/s of the week?
The ones when I get to read, write, review, edit, listen to Bruce, laugh with my kids, kiss my man, chant, eat chocolate, and sip champagne. Which is pretty much most of them….
10. Favourite Flower?
Orange tulips and bright pink water lillies.

So before I pass the award on, remember….
“If you are mentioned, don’t forget to thank the person that nominated you for the award on your blog, answer the ten questions, choose ten other recipients to pass the award onto.”

Scotched by Kaitlyn Dunnett

scotched

TITLE:          Scotched

AUTHOR:     Kaitlyn Dunnett

RRP:                     varies

PUBLISHER: Kensington Publishers

I’ll be honest – I’m not really into mysteries. Well, there was a time when I devoured every Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie novel I could lay my paws on, but once it had run its course I never really went back to them. So I read the  first few pages with a certain ambivalence – and did I get my butt kicked.

Our heroine Liss MacCrimmon sets the stage succinctly and in true Miss Marple style in those first few pages and if I had a few issues with some minor things (Dunnett does like adverbs….)the story caught my interest and before I knew what was happening I had to find out what was going to happen to the folks in Moosetookalook. I do have to say right here, right now that I did struggle with that name – Moosetookalook……But I digress.  The important thing is the story was intriguing enough for me to resist the urge to fall about laughing every time I read it.

Liss owns a Scottish Emporium in Moosetookalook, a small Maine town with all the usual small town politics and jealousies and secrets. She is also engaged to Dan, son of the local hotel owner.  So when a Mystery Writer’s conference being held at the hotel, becomes the scene of not one but two murders….well things get heated. When the murders can be linked back to Liss, who has on occasion inadvertently found herself playing amateur sleuth, things become tricky. Enter the State Trooper who used to be Dan’s biggest rival for the affections of Liss….and you have a three cup, half a packet of chocolate cookies, read until you get to the end book on your hands.

Scotched isn’t Great Literature – it is however Great Fun and it is a very enjoyable read. Dunnett creates engaging characters and an intriguing plot line – and when you’re finished, you want more. If that’s not the sign of a good writer – and a good book, I don’t know what is.
